As we head inch closer to the end of the year the question of GOTY (Game of the Year) is on every gamers’ mind. I’d feel a bit overwhelmed to just sit down and pick 1 game! Can you image the pressure on anyone who has to do that? We’ve seen so many titles this year, Portal 2, Skyrim, Skyward Sword, Assassin’s Creed, and a sonic game that didn’t get smashed by reviewers right away. I have a feeling if now you were to ask the gaming community what they think GOTY is most would turn towards either Skyrim or Skyward Sword, both games are currently at over 95 on Metacritic.
I happy to say that even with my backlog I’ve managed to pick up a good number of games released this year. Before the end of the year look for a few more reviews posted on OpPrincess as I try to finish them off so they don’t get added to my hulking backlog next year.
Major Titles purchased this year:
- Alice Madness Returns
- Catherine
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (check out my youtube series Becoming CoD God)
- Skyrim
- Skyward Sword
- Portal 2
There’s a few other but these are the ones that I’d really like to push out before the end of the year! I really hope to see all of these titles listed in a GOTY compilation, especially Catherine since it was a very unique and original game. It doesn’t feel like a lot of games released that aren’t sequels or revisions get a lot of attention these days. This game did a lot for the puzzle genre and actually gave me love for Bach’s music.
What games do you guys think deserve GOTY?

2011 is what I like to call “The Year of the WHOA!”. Many, many games released this year are PHENOMENAL. It’s actually somewhat overwhelming.
From my list, I’d like to point out the top contenders:
- Portal 2, a continuation of the Aperture Science saga containing cynicism, cryptic themes, and science fiction.
- The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, a new Zelda console game that is more intuitive than the past installments.
Those are the two I liked the most out of the year, although names I’ve been interested in would include “Pokemon: Black and White”, “LittleBigPlanet 2″, and even “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D”.
However, my vote goes to Portal 2. I had not heard much about the series until the hype for this game became apparent in my town. I decided to try playing Portal before Portal 2 came out, and fell in love. The game’s concept was fantastic, the characteristics are enticing, and it worked well. Then Portal 2 came around (I didn’t listen much to the hype), and shot these elements to a level that reaches farther than SPACE. (See what I did there?)
Many great games, and to pick one would just be unfair. But we gotta do it.
I have to agree that I want to see Portal 2 make it far in the GOTY competition, but in the same breath I like the idea of a unique game getting the win.
